The Hugenpoet & Friends concept store & deli is the brand ambassador of the Schlosshotel and conveys the lifestyle and culinary delights of Hugenpoet. We met the hostess and sommelier Marion Erker.

A sunny autumn day on the "Rü", as Rüttenscheider Straße in Essen is affectionately called. It is lunchtime; the city's "going-out mile" with its numerous restaurants and bars is well-frequented. Marion Erker is currently preparing a Pinsa, a popular dish among guests of the Hugenpoet & Friends concept store & deli. A classic pizza dough is used. With swift movements, the hostess of Hugenpoet & Friends shapes it into an oval, then the dough disappears into the oven. Unlike pizza, a Pinsa is topped after baking.

Marion Erker calls the Concept Store her 'passion project.' More by chance, she came across the job description and immediately felt drawn to it. Since its opening at the end of October 2024, she has been managing Hugenpoet & Friends, contributing her own ideas – which is expressly encouraged. The assortment includes wines and delicacies – among them the homemade specialties 'Schlossgemachtes' (Castle-made) – beautiful items for the table, useful cooking utensils, and gifts. 'The word 'Friends' refers not only to our guests but also to the manufacturers whose products have accompanied us at the castle for years,' says Marion Erker. 'Here you will find Table Couture by Petra Diener and candles by Engels. The tea towels and cooking aprons are from the label 1730.' Fresh flower bouquets are also available. The store manager had noticed that there was no florist within walking distance. No sooner said than done: Marion Erker is a woman of swift decisions.

Before joining Hugenpoet & Friends, the trained sommelier worked for over 13 years as a hostess in Michelin-starred gastronomy. She explains with a radiant look that being able to combine both here, on the "Rü", brings her particular joy. In the premises of the former coffee roastery, which belonged to the neighboring café, Marion Erkner offers genuine moments of well-being. 'We are a day bar, aperitif bar, wine bar – everything in one place,' she explains. The audience is diverse, 'with hip young people and connoisseurs.' What is particularly important to her: the relaxed, informal atmosphere. Marion Erkner laughs: 'So many people have met here. If you come alone, you won't stay alone for long. There's always someone to chat with. And to enjoy a glass or two of wine.' The sommelier says she tasted extensively with the castle team until the wine list was finalized. Now, treasures from Hugenpoet's wine cellar are on the menu, as are her personal 'preferred selections'.

The word 'Friends' refers not only to our guests but also to the manufacturers whose products have accompanied us at the castle for years.

For those who now feel inclined to visit the Hugenpoet & Friends concept store & deli: The store is open Tuesday to Saturday from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and until 10:00 PM for exclusive events. Up to 25 guests can be accommodated in the cozy premises; for an exclusive booking with a set meal, the number of guests is limited to a maximum of 16. Marion Erker also conducts exclusive tastings – both with wines from the store or the castle cellar, and with wines according to the customer's preference. Ms. Erkner could tell much more, but first, she needs to attend to her lunch guests.

Marion Erker offers open wines on a four-to-six-week rotation. Always included: a sparkling wine and a natural wine. The 'Schlossgemachtes' specialties also make their way into the serving: 'In winter, we offer a 'Bratapfel Spritz' (Baked Apple Spritz), composed based on our baked apple liqueur.'
