A hike through the Kettwig City Forest is a real insider tip. The 13 km long hike offers everything: historic half-timbered houses, a reservoir, forest, fields, and streams like the Schuirbach or Brederbach. The starting point is in the Kettwig City Forest, then it goes up and down, counter-clockwise, and the last section follows the towpath along the Ruhr through the valley.

The following services are included in your room rate: Parking, minibar, coffee and tea station, guest supplies, cleaning, shoe shine service, Wi-Fi, telephone use, TV, valet service, 24-hour reception, concierge service, bathrobe & slippers, safe, pillow menu and allergy-friendly bedding, as well as turn-down service upon request, use of the Fitness First gym in Essen Kettwig.
We would like to politely point out that the city of Essen has been levying an accommodation tax of 5 percent on the gross room rate, with a maximum amount of EUR 9.00 per person & day, since August 1, 2025. The accommodation tax will be added to the booked room rate and calculated directly on site.
When booking the Flexible Rate, the room can be canceled free of charge up to 48 hours before arrival. In the event of a later cancellation, 90% of the net accommodation price will be charged, provided the room cannot be re-let. In case of no-show, the total price of the booking will be charged. A credit card is required to guarantee the booking.
When booking the non-refundable rate, a free cancellation or modification of your reservation is not possible. The total amount of 100% of the booked rate is due as a prepayment at the time of booking. Please note that deviating booking conditions may apply, e.g. over Christmas and New Year's Eve or when booking our adventure packages.
Schlosshotel Hugenpoet is located in Essen-Kettwig near the Ruhr. Düsseldorf Airport is 15 – 25 minutes away by car, depending on traffic. From Düsseldorf city center, Essen city center and Oberhausen city center, the journey time by car is approx. half an hour, from Cologne city center approx. 45 – 50 minutes. Highly recommended: The Gasometer Oberhausen is an industrial monument in Oberhausen and Europe’s tallest exhibition and event hall. It is a 19.6 km bike ride from Hugenpoet and should appeal to all bikers who are as interested in culture as they are in sports activities.
